Biography

Born in Naples 1957, Giuseppe Camerlingo  started his musical training as a private student of Harmony and Counterpoint with Jacopo Napoli and later at the S.Pietro a Majella Conservatory with Francesco d’Avalos for Composition, Vincenzo Guerrini for Double Bass and Franco Caracciolo for Conducting.

After completing his studies at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory in Parma he attended classes by Franco Ferrara at the Fiesole Music School, by Thomas Ungar in Stuttgart and lectures on Music Phenomenology given by Sergiu Celibidache in Saluzzo in 1987 and 1988.

He started his career as double-bass player – 1981 to 1987 – and was subsequently appointed “Maestro Sostituto” at the “Teatro Regio” in Parma – 1988 to 1993.

Between 1994 and 1996 he participated in the “Ferrara Musica” productions of Le Nozze di Figaro and Il Barbiere di Siviglia, both conducted by Claudio Abbado with whom Camerlingo had the opportunity to follow the productions of Le Nozze di Figaro at “Wiener Staatsoper”, Boris Godunov and Elektra at “Osterfestspiele” in Salzburg, of Verdi’s Requiem and other concert productions with “Berliner Philharmoniker”.

These training and professional experiences have greatly contributed to his development as conductor and are reflected in the plurality of interests that have always characterized his artistic orientation.

From the elaborate chamber programmes with the Harmonie Ensemble to the great symphony repertoire from Haydn to Mahler, to  Italian opera tradition, works directed by Giuseppe Camerlingo have received special recognition for his careful interpretative research in the different musical styles.

Since 1991 he has been invited  as guest conductor by several symphony orchestras and opera houses, among others: “Oser A. Toscanini”, “A. Scarlatti” Naples, “Teatro La Fenice” Venice, “Opera Română” Bucharest, “Opera Naţională Română” Cluj Napoca, “Opera Română“ Iași, “Moldova Philharmonic” Iași, Krakow Philharmonic, Opera Nowa Bydgoscz, Teatr Wielki Poznan, Sinfonietta Cracovia.

Since 1997 he has served on the faculties of Music Conservatories in Adria, Bolzano, Fermo, Padova, Rovigo, Cagliari, Cesena, where he has taught “Orchestra Workshop”. In Cesena, since 2002 Camerlingo is a promoter of the project “Primo Palcoscenico” for producing Opera with young artists, that involves the “Bonci” Theater, the “Bruno Maderna” Conservatory and the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna.

In this context, he prepared and conducted: Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, de Falla’s, El Retablo, Haydn’s Il mondo della luna (Also DVD production), Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto.

Versione 2In 2000 he founded the Associazione Cosarara which promotes research and dissemination of music still not known by the public today. With this aim he published the score and the CD “Stabat Mater del Pergolese”, 1810 amazing Paisiello’s transcription of the masterwork of Pergolesi, and “Armida” by Tommaso Traetta.

Another important objective of Cosarara is to facilitate the meeting of young musicians from different countries and to put the nusical creation as a powerful means of communication between different cultures and different disciplines. Emblematic of this activity is the project “Mare Nostrum”  which brought together into the “Koinè Orchestra” young musicians fron different Mediterranean areas on the model of Daniel Barenboim’s West Eastern Divan Orchestra.

As musical manager and promoter, has initiated the project of the construction of cultural Startup “Le Imprese della Musica,” Spin-off of Cosarara Association, with the intention of stimulating youth entrepreneurship in the field of music. The project received the highest score in the competition “Impresa Creativa Missione Possibile” organized by the Municipality of Cesena.
